Used and pre-owned markets on eBay are a pretty green place to shop, but they're not perfect. Packaging and shipping items between sellers and buyers are obvious weaknesses in the system. To solve some of these problems, the eBay Green Team hosts an annual Innovation Expo that calls on employees to contribute ideas to make eBay's business and community mor... A group of designers in Hungary have done away with what has long been a staple of bicycle design, those oily old chains, with their creation, the StringBike. Instead of being propelled forward the traditional way, this novel new bike utilizes a clever symmetrical rope and pulley system that may make cycling safer, smoothe... Notwithstanding our previously mentioned reservations about ground source heat pumps, For people who live by lakes and rivers they can make a lot of sense. There is no drilling required; just throw the pipe into the lake. But even this simpler system is subject to errors in installation, and all that pipe can disrupt fish habitat and cause other problems.
That is why I was so intrigued when I saw the advertisement for the Limnion Geothermal Transfer System; It puts the enti... Read the full story on TreeHugger

the hole in the ozone layer over Antarctica. Image: NASA, public domain.
But It Will Take Longer for Holes at the Poles
According to a report titled "Scientific Assessment of Ozone Depletion 2010" by U.N. scientists, the ozone layer has finally stopped thinning and could recover to pre-1980 levels by 2045-2060, though the annual springtime ozone hole over Antarctica (pictured above) is not expected to recover until 2073. The Montreal Protocol that banned many ozone-depleting chemicals, signed in 1987, is mostly responsible for the recovery.... Read the full story on TreeHugger
A new dimension of sightless awareness equipment. This is the “VIA” Visually Impaired Assistant, a pair of hand-centric devices to make the day of a visually impaired person a whole lot easier. These devices use VMD Video Motion Detection technologies, 4 mini cameras, and a voice operated GPS receiver, all to act as both a walking stick and a mapping system. All the while looking rather fabulous on the hands as sensually molded pieces of jewelry (or “super heavy-duty metal equipment” if you’re too masculine for that sensual “J” word.)
These devices use 2 different vibration mechanisms to guide the user away from obstacles and toward their final bespoken destination. VIA is charged via a wirelessly functioning mat (that incidentally, I wish I had for every one of my other electronic devices.) Totally too perfect. Now watch the video that shows the devices in action and prepare yourself for a totally “awww, love” ending.

Eco Factor: Concept vehicle powered by a zero-emission electric engine.
Driving single in a four-seat car is far from being an eco-friendly way to commute. Vehicle designers have tried to save parking space and reduce pollution by designing cars with one wheel less that run on electric engines. The E-True 3W is yet another three-wheeled electric vehicle concept that has been designed by Ricardo Fedrizzi.
The stylishly compact zero-emission vehicle carries just one passenger seat and has been based on the golden ration in human proportions. With three wheels, this compact vehicle is easy to drive and also saves on parking space and emissions.
Eco Factor: Concept cooker powered by solar energy.
The Hot-Liner is a concept solar cooker designed by Korean designers Yonggu Do, Sukhoon HONG and Eunha SEO with an aim to reduce the number of trees that are cut down each year for firewood. Designed to be used in rural African countries, the Hot-Liner concept features a flexible battery, a solar panel and a flexible solar cell to harvest renewable solar energy.
With flexible PV cells and battery the concept cooker can change its shape depending on the intensity of flame and the size of the bowl. The Hot-Liner can also be connected with other Hot-Liners to enhance temperature or increase the cooking surface area.

Regular ceramics are pretty energy-intensive products, though there's a number of innovative alternatives (like no-fire tiles or crockery made from recycled post-consumer and post-industrial waste). But what about paper-based pottery? Well, the company Ceylon Paper Pottery has their tasteful version of fair-trade, sustainable and biodegradable pottery -- made from waste wood, recycled paper and sand, without toxic chemicals or varnishes -- and is actual... known for their repurposed retro phones, hulger has now designed a low energy light bulb with a unique twisting design.
the plumen 001 light bulb has been in the works for a number of years, with the first prototype being featured on designboom back in novmeber 2007. the plumen 001 aims to show off the unique coil of compact fluorescent bulbs rather
than hide it like the traditional design. the plumen bulb uses 80% less energy and lasts 8 times longer than incandescent
bulbs. the form features two swerving lines that mirror each other to create a symmetrical look. the plumen 001 design
was developed in collaboration with designer sam wilkinson and 002 and 003 models are already in the works.
